One New York couple will do absolutely anything for their four-legged companions, so when one of their elderly rescue dogs was struggling to see, they didn’t rest until they found a way to help her.

“They are our family and we have made a promise to them to give them the best life we can,” said Mariesa Hughes. So when she and husband Chris noticed their elderly pit bull named Gremlin, who they rescued from a life of dog fighting at four years old and has since battled cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, and a blood disease, was struggling with her vision and developing cataracts, they were ready to do anything to help her.

Gremlin underwent surgery but developed dangerous pressure in her right eye, which caused blindness in the eye and had to get an injection to deaden the eye to ease the pain. Unfortunately, Gremlin’s eyesight still wasn’t great and because she was farsighted, she’d often get frightened by things close to her that she couldn’t see and started to avoid interacting with anyone.

“That was the worst. You don’t want to go to love on your dog and have her be absolutely scared to death,” Mariesa said. “Her quality of life was suffering, and we really considered her happiness… I started contacting doctors all over the country about glasses for her to help improve her vision in her left eye.”

Dr. Petra Lackner, a veterinary ophthalmologist, told them to try contact lenses and suggested using human-grade lenses since special veterinary contacts can be extremely expensive. Mariesa ordered contact lenses online and tried them for the first time last month, but was stunned by how much more social, energetic, and happy Gremlin was.

“She kisses us, paws at us to pet her. She is happier,” Mariesa said. “The best thing, though, the defining moment, was when she saw herself in the bottom of the door. You know the part where there is a little mirror-like kick plate? She lay down in front of it and just stared at herself. It was amazing.”
